The colonoscopy went well.  The procedure was painless and the pipes, er, pipe is clean.  I’ve already eaten my burger and fries from Five Guys and now I’m going to catch up on season one of Chuck.  I have an endoscopy next Tuesday, but thankfully the only prep I have to do for that is to kick it like a mogwai and not eat after midnight on Monday.  No more of this liquid diet crap.  And all of this came about because earlier this summer when I had a physical examination for the first time since high school, my bloodwork showed that my blood count was low.  The doctors are trying to see if there’s any internal bleeding.  One procedure down, one to go.

WTF Moment of the Week:  I was watching an episode of Lost (featuring my favorite character John Locke) on the Sci-Fi channel last night, and there was a commercial for Extreme Championship Wrestling…on Sci-Fi.  Wrasslin’ on a science-fiction station?  Really?  WTF?!?

Oh How the Mighty Have Fallen

The past two Columbus Days I was in New York City, attending tapings of Late Show with David Letterman, as well as attending a book reading by Jancee Dunn (2006), and seeing a Foo Fighters concert at the Borgata (2007).  This Columbus Day?  I’m on a liquid diet and drinking 3 liters of a laxative for my colonoscopy tomorrow.  Oh how the mighty have fallen.  I can’t complain too much though, it’s nice to have health insurance.  But comparing and contrasting how awesome the last two Columbus Days were compared to this year’s makes it a tough pill laxative to swallow.  I don’t know what sucks more:  the liquid diet for the past 2 days or the aforementioned God-awful tasting solution that I have to drink for the procedure tomorrow.  I’ll go with the former for now because clearly I like to eat.  If I never have chicken broth again, it will be too soon.  Not that the laxative has been a cakewalk either.  Not since the jalapeñosteak Hot Pocket incident of 1997 have I been on the can so much.  And as soon as I’m released from the hospital, I’m calling Five Guys Burgers and picking up a bacon cheeseburger and cajun fries on the way home.  Or at least my Dad will be, because I’ll be riding shotgun since I’m not supposed to drive for 24 hours.

Congratulations to Mad Dog, Tina, Will, Ziggy, and Zoomba on the birth of Brooklyn Grace.

What I’ve been up to:

-Saw WALL·E.  Still have to see the rest of the summer blockbusters, but this is my favorite movie of the year/release by Pixar by far.  I guess it boils down to the fact that we’re all searching for our respective EVE’s or WALL·E’s in the world.  I know I am.

-Hung out with Grant and Chal when they were in town for a Browns preseason game.  Got to have dinner with them before the game and lunch the next day before they went back to Toledo.  It was damn good to see them.

-Saw Star Wars:  The Clone Wars with Timm and his friend Steve.  It was enjoyable.  Even if Jesus Christ directed a Star Wars movie, it wouldn’t be good enough for some fans, so there’s no way that this will appease the haters.  It’ll be cool to see General Grievous in action again once the series airs.  And I need to hang out with Timm more since he’s a local yokel now and not in Michigan or freakin’ France.

-My Death Magnetic fever is reaching critical mass.  I was going to wait until this Friday to listen to the whole album when it’s released.  You only get to listen to an album for the first time once.  But after listening to the radio premiere (hosted by Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins) of the other 3 songs in addition to the 3 songs that have been released, I caved and went to YouTube to listen to the remaining 4 songs.  “The Judas Kiss” is my favorite song hands down, and I love the lyrics to “Broken, Beat & Scarred.”  Once Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters days are done (hopefully not anytime soon), somebody better give him a radio or talk show.  I knew the guy is hilarious from seeing his banter in between songs at Foo Fighters shows, but as a host?  Forget about it.  And if the Metallica and Foo Fighters shows that Lars proposed ever materialize, I’m so there.  In the meantime, I’ll be catching the Metallica shows in Columbus and Detroit in November and January respectively.

As you can see from the “Now Watching” above, I’m currently viewing Season 4 of The Office.  If you recall, I went to the Office Convention in beautiful Scranton, Pennsylvania last fall.  The highlights of the convention for me (in addition to meeting cast and crew) were the Question and Answer (Q&A) sessions with the cast and the writers.  The cast Q&A is on a bonus disc exclusive to Target while the writers’ Q&A is available on disc 4 of all versions of the boxed set.  I asked the outsourcing question at the writers’ Q&A and lo and behold it’s there.  The camera is on the writers the whole time so you don’t get to see the audience members asking the questions, but if you hear a familiar voice of a dork during the writers’ Q&A, that dork is me.  I’ve always wanted to be on a DVD, and now my voice is.  And I’m subtitled too!  Cool beans.

Be back here around Columbus Day.  Thank God for government holidays.

Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace

The Foo Fighters concert here in Cleveland was on Friday.  I didn’t think I’d be able to make it.  I bought my ticket back in March when they went on sale, but I had missed the last 2 days of work due to back pain (this time it’s mid-to-lower back pain as opposed to the usual lower back pain).  A syndicated episode of Two and a Half Men had started (my old man loves that show) signaling that it was 7:00PM, so I knew time was running out:  should I stay or should I go?  A quick glance at the setlist on the Foo Fighters message board later, I took a shower and was on my way.  And there were 4 (!) motorcycle policemen on the way to Quicken Loans Arena, and that was before Linndale, so I set the cruise for 65mph the rest of the way.

I’m glad I sucked it up and went.  I took a disposable camera with me and the majority of my shots were of violinist/cellist/vocalist Jessy Green *swoon*.  Seeing her perform again was worth the price of admission.  I also took pictures of the other guys and hopefully they’ll all come out okay.  Maybe I’ll post them randomly here like after my last trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art last year.

The Foo Fighters’ set was solid.  We got two covers of The Who:  “Young Man Blues” and “Bargain,” both of which they performed on VH1 Rock Honors.   Nothing beats seeing it in person:  this ain’t Memorex, it’s live!  I dug the snippet of Focus’ “Hocus Pocus” during “Stacked Actors.”  And Dave Grohl’s dad was in attendance and received a dedication from Dave, which was the “Awwwwww” moment of the night.  Kelly Pavlik was there too and was on the acoustic stage for a couple of minutes but I don’t know/care about sports.

I also ran into Lindsay at the show, who was in my law school class before I got my eviction notice.  It was nice to see her.

This week I’m seeing 3 advanced screenings in a row.  I am a cheap bastard.  And speaking of cheap, nothing chaps my ass like paying for parking (i.e. Friday night at the concert).  Since I didn’t want to pay $8 at Tower City, I bought a ticket for The Dark Knight and had my parking stub validated at Tower City Cinemas (4 hours of free parking).  When I left the show, I made it with 5 minutes to spare (arrived at 8:08PM, left at 12:03AM).  I saved $3 and helped contribute to The Dark Knight’s box office take.  They say it has a shot of dethroning Titanic as the highest-grossing film here in the U.S..  I hope it does.  And next time I buy a ticket for The Dark Knight, I hope to see it (still haven’t, waiting for the crowds to die down).
